Pregnancy leads to stretching and widening of the abdominal skin and muscles that does not completely reverse following childbirth.  Frequently, ladies may notice a slight skin overhang, and an increase in their waist circumference in spite of regaining their pre-pregnancy weight.  Furthermore, the breast gland often undergoes atrophy (shrinkage) following cessation of breast feeding, leading to a droopy breast with loose skin.  The mummy makeover is a combination procedure addressing both the droopy breast (breast lift) and tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) aims to remove excess abdominal skin and tighten the abdominal wall muscles.  Mild cases of abdominal laxity may be treated with a mini abdominoplasty, where the skin incision is limited only to the pubic region.  More severe cases of laxity will require a full abdominoplasty in which the incision extends from one iliac crest to the other.  Regardless, the incision line is planned to be hidden within the undergarment so that it is not visible in most instances.  Liposuction may sometimes be performed concurrently to achieve better contour and outcomes.  Use of an abdominal binder may be required postoperatively for about 2 to 3 weeks.

There is a propensity for localized fat deposits to accumulate in various anatomical portions with advancing age.  In women, these tend to be the lower abdomen, hips and thighs.  In men, fat tends to build up at the love handles and the central abdomen.  This may result in undesirable changes in the body morphology.

Liposuction is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes small 5-mm incisions to remove such localized fat deposits.  It should be performed in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise plan, in patients whose weight is relatively stable.  When performed under optimal conditions, liposuction can be a safe and efficacious procedure.

In certain circumstances, the fat obtained from liposuction may be grafted into other anatomical areas, such as the face, the breast, and the buttocks.  In some patients desiring enhanced body definition, liposculpturing is a technique that intentionally creates selective areas of depression to enhance anatomical features resulting in an athletic appearance.

Postoperatively, some patients may require the use of compression garments for 1 to 2 weeks.

Skin laxity and fat deposition may occur in the inner arms and thighs with advancing age, following pregnancy, or following massive weight loss, leading to undesirable changes in morphology that may be socially embarrassing.  Excess skin folds may also result in fungal infections, abrasions due to contact with clothing, and trapping of perspiration leading to malodor.  In some cases, patients may experience difficulty finding clothing that is able to fit them and conceal their anatomical deficits at the same time.

Arm lift (brachioplasty), thigh lift (thighplasty), and the bra-line back lift are simple procedures that may help one alleviate such changes in the morphology.  This may involve liposuction alone, or in combination with excision of the skin.  Postoperatively, patients may require the use of compression garments for 1 to 2 weeks.

A successful outcome is achieved when there is optimal reduction of excess fat and/or skin, and the resultant scars obtained are well-concealed, leading to an improvement of the overall body morphology.  Dr Yeo is experienced in this area, arising from cosmetic arm- and thigh- lifts, as well as post-massive weight loss cases.

Recent advances in the field of bariatric surgery now allow obese patients to undergo safe and efficacious weight loss.  In many cases, significant weight loss leads to a large excess of skin, resulting in unsightly skin folds and rolls, which may harbor fungal infections, trap perspiration and cause malodors, and abrasions.  Frequently, such patients are unable to fit regular clothing as a result of the skin folds.

Post-massive weight loss body contouring involves a combination of procedures including circumferential abdominoplasty, arm- and thigh- lifts, back lift, breast lift, and face lifts.  Medisave may be used for some of these procedures.  Many of these patients experience significant symptomatic relief following surgery and the satisfaction level following such procedures are normally high.
